Lone Ranger and Tonto #1
This special one-shot comic takes place some time after the current series. It begins with the Lone
Ranger and Tonto buying supplies from a store run by a kindly old man and his wife. The wife gives them
some extra food in thanks for all they have done. As the Lone Ranger and Tonto leave town, they spot
vultures circling nearby. They Arrive to find an overturned wagon and a dead man and woman beside it in
sleeping bags. Just then the Lone Ranger is attacked by a boy, but Tonto knocks him down. The boy
doesn't talk. The two take the boy back into town and leave him in the custody of the storekeepers. They
return to the scene to bury the dead people. Before digging, the Lone Ranger realizes that everything of
value is gone except the shovel. A quick search finds all the belongings in a hole.
The Lone Ranger finds a letter and upon reading it races back to town. The letter was from the woman's
brother. He talked about the boy, named James, having serious problems and being a danger. He urges
the couple to bring James to Salt Lake City where he could get some help. The Lone Ranger and Tonto
arrive in town to find a man dead in the street and another blaming them for his death because they
brought the killer youth to them. Inside the store they find the storekeeper and his wife murdered and all
the guns and ammunition taken.
Outside the Lone Ranger has to stop a lynch mob that is forming. He and Tonto take off after the boy
and track him up a mountain. They have a long stand-off with the boy, who is well armed, but has no food
or water. That evening they sneak up on the lad and stop him. But James tosses dirt in the Ranger's face,
causing him to drop his gun. James picks it up, but Tonto hits him in the arm with a knife, causing the gun
to fall to the edge of a cliff. The Ranger begs James to not go after it, but the boy does and he falls to his
death. The Lone Ranger and Tonto take James' body back to town, where the Ranger admonishes the
gathering mob. Afterward, they ride off together into the sunrise.
Lone Ranger #11
As the gallows are being built, Tonto goes to visit Rafael in jail. Rafael agrees to hear him
out and Tonto starts telling him a story. The story is about a wolf on the hunt. One day he
finds that things have changed. The land is scarred and barren. As the wolf searches, he
finds the source of the destruction -- man. The wolf sees a side of ribs smoking in the camp
and he sneaks in. Meanwhile, the Lone Ranger makes a nighttime visit to the sheriff where
he warns him to stay on the right side of the law, since the sheriff was responsible for the
deaths of outlaws linked to Rafael.
Back to Tonto's story, the wolf slips into the camp at night and takes a rack of ribs. As he
carries them back across the barren wilderness, he thinks of the female back home, nursing
a litter of pups. After a long journey the wolf arrives, but finds things are not the same.
Rafael asks Tonto what happens next, but Tonto says he does not know. At that point the
jailer comes to take Tonto out and prepare Rafael for his hanging. Tonto stays to watch the
boy die so he will not be alone. That evening he returns to find the Lone Ranger standing
outside Linda's window looking in on her as she sleeps. In the final scene, Butch Cavendish
returns to Texas.
Lone Ranger #12
The Lone Ranger wakes Winthrop from a
nightmare. He explains that he followed
Cavendish's money trail straight to him. The
Ranger has a special request to make of
Cavendish's ex-manager. In the next scene, the
Ranger returns to the cabin at sunrise and it met
by Tonto. They talk about the havoc the Ranger
has been wreaking on BC Rail, telling the Ranger
there is no honor in it. As they talk, Tonto spots a
fire on the horizon. They approach to find it is a
signal fire from Sheriff Loring. The Sheriff asks for
their help. He says he still thinks they're outlaws,
but feels they'll do the right thing for him outside
his jurisdiction.
Two thugs sitting inside the BC Rail office prepare to be attacked by the
Lone Ranger, but are confronted by Butch Cavendish instead.
Inside the Ranger's mine, Linda discovers that he is about to leave on a trip.
She asks a favor of him before he leaves. He finds Dan Jr. caring for his
father's saddle. He tells Dan that he's going away, but offers to get him a horse
when he returns.
The Ranger then meets up with Tonto and Loring and the three ride out
together. There is a brief scene of an unseen man returning a doll to a girl,
only to have her and her mother rush off in horror. The issue concludes with
Cavendish having killed a guard and confronting Winthrop in his quest to find
the Lone Ranger.
Lone Ranger #13
FIRE! The Lone Ranger, Tonto and the sheriff are riding late at night when they
encounter a prairie fire. Inside they hear cries for help. Without hesitation, the Lone Ranger
goes in. Meanwhile, Dan Reid Jr. has a nightmare about a man (probably Cavendish)
coming to collect his eyes and those of his family.
The Lone Ranger finds a family trapped at their wagon. He rides out with a baby. He is
burned and has rescuers douse him with water. He prepares to ride back in for the parents,
but Tonto is already walking out carrying the man and leading his horse with the woman on
it. Tonto is badly burned and his hair singed short and he collapses.
Meanwhile, Butch Cavendish is eating breakfast at Winthrop's table. There are dead
men about and two thugs stand guard. Cavendish tells Winthrop that he is there to thank
him for taking his money and he is proud of him. He asks Winthrop for help in finding the
Lone Ranger.
Back at the fire, the Lone Ranger and Tonto (who has recovered) join the others in
putting out the fire. Tonto remains aloof afterward and he, the Ranger and the sheriff leave
to set up camp. As the Lone Ranger and Tonto visit, the sheriff goes into the town they are
headed to to visit with the sheriff there. He returns with a package of clothes for the two
heroes. They're powder blue shirts and pants. The Ranger accepts, but Tonto declines.
Tonto stays at the camp, tries to hunt a deer, but stops when he sees it is a doe nursing
her young. The Sheriff and the Lone Ranger ride to a house on the edge of town and enter
to find it splattered with blood.
