(Editor’s note: The following story is from a compilation of e-mails from subscriber
Bobby Adams. He has an interesting mystery he hopes someone can help him solve.)

Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels made a Lone Ranger that was in color about how he
became the Lone Ranger. A lot of people have said that it does not exist but I have 100
percent positive prove beyond any doubt that it does. I got picture proof last November
and written proof last December. I am still trying to get some more info.
When it was on TV in the later part of ’73 to mid -74 I was in the Army. I was told about
this color Lone Ranger back in the mid-80s. When I started trying to find it nobody had
heard of it. Then in 1988 I got a letter from Neil Summers telling me about it, so that is
only written proof I had. I was talking to a friend of mine in the later part of 2001 and
that is when she told me that she had seen it on TV in later 1973 to mid -74 she said
that he was in a cave and made his own silver bullets.
Since then I have gotten a lot of proof about this color Lone Ranger. If you will go to
http://nimst.tripod.com/cgi-bin/UC16.html you can see the picture (see next page).
Clayton Moore’s nephew, Craig, has the picture. It is a scene from this color Lone
Ranger about how he became the Lone Ranger.
Now that I have proof, if you put all of this in the newsletter that will let people know that
it does exist and maybe somebody will know where this is. I am trying to get a
conformation of the correct title. I believe it is “The Lone Ranger Rides Again” from
1955, not the 1939 serial of the same title.

(This is Craig Coomer’s reply to Bobby)

I hope this e-mail finds you well and you are enjoying your holidays. Since I received
your e-mail about the color movie on the origin of the Lone Ranger I have been doing
some research. I asked all the relatives still living who might have some information.
They all confirmed your tale of the color episode. From what I can determine, it was the
25th Silver Anniversary Show first telecast in February 1958. At that time both ABC and
CBS were airing the original series.
But I can't confirm whether one or both stations aired the special show. My mother has
stated that new scenes were shot for the show. Including the one that you inquired
about. There is some confusion as to the rest of the story line. One of my cousins
believes that color reels were made for a possible movie that was never released in the
theaters. They were used instead for the TV special. I have not yet been able to verify
this information.
My research will continue. Wish me luck. Dealing with two major broadcasting
companies like ABC and CBS can be troublesome. I will forward any additional facts as
they become available.
Best Regards, C Craig

(Bobby continues:)

Sometime around 1985 or 1986 on CBN which is now the Family Channel, they started
showing the Lone Ranger, and they started with the three-part b/w version of how he
became the Lone Ranger. I had had never seen this before. I told a friend of mine at
work about it. He watched it and said it was good but Clayton and Jay made one that
was in color about how he became the Lone Ranger that was better than this one. That
is when I started looking for that color Lone Ranger.
A lot of people said they never heard of it. When Neil Summers wrote his TV book I
wrote him about this color Lone Ranger. Later on I got this copy of a page from the
book “Feature Films” from the library in Fitzgereld, Ga., and it has “Lone Ranger Rides
Again” rel 1955, so I started trying to find out what this is.
In my search I found out about Boyd Magers. I asked him about this “Lone Ranger
Rides Again.” He said it was a compilation of TV shows. It didn't fit what I already had.
When Clayton wrote his book, Frank Thompson helped him. I wrote and asked him
about this “Lone Ranger Rides Again.” He said the same thing Boyd said.
It still didn't fit because this was rel 1955 and the first color Lone Ranger show was mot
made until 1956. When the show ended in 1957 39 color episodes had been made.
Later they put the 39 color shows into 13 sets of 3 each. None have the title “Lone
Ranger Rides Again.” Then it hit me. Neil’s letter does fit this Lone Ranger. PLEASE
DO NOT CONFUSE THIS “LONE RANGER RIDES AGAIN” 1955 WITH THE 1939
SERIAL OF THE SAME TITLE.
Latter part of 2001 a friend of mine at work was having knee trouble, I have known he
and his wife a long time. I was talking to Linda about Robert and we got to talking about
the Lone Ranger and I told her about this color Lone Ranger about how he became the
Lone Ranger that I am looking for. She said she saw it. I said when, she said on TV
channel 13 in Macon, Ga., sometime in later 1973 to mid -74. She said she never knew
how he became the Lone Ranger and how it came about. She said what was unique
about it was it was in color. I said that’s it. She said he was in a cave and made his own
silver bullets he melted the silver and poured them into a mold, but that is all she said
about it.
I asked her to look at the b/w version and see if anything might help in remembering the
color Lone Ranger. She said it was not in parts like the b/w version it was one
continuous movie. I said that fits what Neil said about it being edited together.
Last November my wife and I were on the Internet trying to find something about this
color Lone Ranger when we found this picture from Clayton Moore’s nephew. I had
never seen this picture before and I got to looking at it. He is in a cave looking at a
bullet. He has some on a table. Linda said he made his own bullets I bet that’s it. I
asked her the next day if she could go into more detail about that scene. She said he
was at a table.
When she said that I knew I had it, but anyway she said he was at a table; sometimes
he was standing, sometimes he was sitting. One time he is sitting, looking at silver
bullets. I said he is at a table, she said yes, that it was some kind of rustic table. Then I
showed her the picture and she said that’s it. I got with Craig, Clayton's nephew, about
the picture and the color Lone Ranger. He didn't know about it so I sent him some more
info.
He said you have aroused my curiosity now. I got this e-mail from him last Christmas. I
told him it had been shown in the theaters. I went to the library and found when it was
shown on TV. I told some friends of mine at church about it and Dusty said he
remembered seeing this and him making his own silver bullets and started telling me
about that scene. I said that is the same thing Linda said. When did you see it? He said
when he was stationed at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. He saw it at the Realto
Theater sometime between June 1955 and November 1956. I said that fits the time
frame of the “Lone Ranger Rides Again” REL 1955 He said he thinks was the title.
Also, the Wrather Corp bought the rights to the Lone Ranger in 1954, one year before
this was released.
I am in the process of trying to find the correct title. Everything that I have points to the
“Lone Ranger Rides Again” REL 1955. This color Lone Ranger is out there
somewhere. I feel it is in a film storage facility somewhere. It needs to be found so it can
be put on video. As you can see this color Lone Ranger does exist. There have been
two film fires, but they were both in the 1960s and this Lone Ranger was shown in the
1970s.
Please I need help to find this color Lone Ranger.
Thank you

(Editor’s note: I don’t know about you, but I’m intrigued. I have vague childhood
memories of seeing a color version. I remember a scene where the eyeholes of the
mask are cut out of bullet holes in Dan Reid’s vest. If anyone can shed some light on
this mystery, please let either of us know.)

The mystery of the color
story is finally solved!
(Editor’s note: Member Bobby Adams has proven to be quite a detective. In the last
issue we shared his story about his quest to find a mysterious, elusive color movie
starring Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels which explains the origin of how Reed
became the Lone Ranger. He wasn’t imagining things. The show exists! Below is his tale
of how he found this mystery show.)

Hi Joe,
Here is the final update for the newsletter. Neil Summers said the color Lone Ranger
how he became the Lone Ranger was specifically filmed for his anniversary. Craig
Coomer has it was the 25th anniversary. Dusty said he saw this color Lone Ranger
between June 1955 and November 1956 at the Realto. The book “Feature Films” has
“The Lone Ranger Rides Again” Rel 1955 in color by Jack Wrather and starring Clayton
Moore.
I heard from the Library of Congress April 18 with news that ties all of this together.
They sent me a page copy of “TV Guide” dated Feb. 1, 1958. They also sent me a
page copy of “Variety” TV reviews dated Feb. 16, 1955.
Here is the whole story. Jack Wrather bought the Lone Ranger in the fall of 1954. In
1955, for the 22nd anniversary, he wanted to celebrate the purchase of the property in
a big way with a one hour filmed refresher course. He told the entire history of how the
Lone Ranger became the Lone Ranger all over again from the time he was ambushed
as a Texas Ranger and Tonto nursed him back to health through his acquisition of
Silver, his
adoption of silver bullets, etc.
This aired on TV Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 12 and 13, 1955, on CBS and ABC.
Three years latter this was shown again for the 25th anniversary on TV Saturday, Feb.
1, 1958, on CBS. IT'S OUT THERE LET'S FIND IT!
